Where do I find SAFE writing inspiration?

As Christian writers who try to keep our minds out of the gutter, this can be a tough one.

Many times I'll hear people say they turn to music for inspiration--and that's all well and good, but what happens when you don't know what to listen to and are too afraid of hearing bad music before you find something actually worth hearing?

Personally, I adore Pinterest aesthetic boards--but I've heard a few writers say they don't like to use Pinterest because of the secular influence it could have if one were to stray in the wrong places.

So what is a person left with? When there are bad influences in nearly everything around us, what can we turn to for clean, safe inspiration?

My grandmother once told me something that entirely changed the way I look at animals.

She told me that, instead of just writing an ordinary character, look at how a penguin waddles and describe a man "waddling" like that. This idea morphed an entire idea of using animals and nature for my writing.

I love watching deer as they ghost past trees--but what if I wrote elves like we see deer? Graceful, slender, silent. They are the perfect, living examples of elves. Now from here you could imagine all sorts of things--what if deer actually were elves? What if they look like deer when humans see them, but elves to normal creatures? I'll leave this thought here for whoever wants it XD

Go outside in your yard--or YouTube videos of nature--and watch how animals interact with each other. What if the pigeon and worm over there were actually human? You just watched a story of an assassin trying to find and kill a helpless person who was born into their lot by fate. And who lives under the ground.

Watch nature. It hides all kinds of stories that the average eye doesn't see--but our eyes aren't average, are they? We have eyes that turn the alphabet into sagas--movies, even!

Okay, so number one on this list of where-to-find-inspiration is Nature.

Also, if you have younger siblings who often babble, you can usually pick up some interesting and different stories from them XD When I was five, I wrote a story about an octopus who had magical scissors that could cut time, so you could "cut through time" and visit whatever section you wanted. But you had to be careful, because once time is cut, it can't be fixed. I still want to do something with that idea, but I probably never will.

Art.

Art can tell so many stories, and the best part is, it's everywhere. You don't even have to go online to find it. Just use your imagination!

Asking friends or family members for opinions on what they like most in movies/books can be great too! Sometimes someone says something (that alliteration though) that triggers a whole series of ideas.

Okay, so this one will probably be pretty obvious, but read.

If you write, I cannot stress this enough, read. It can seriously help you so much! Not just in ideas, but in grammar, in character building, in--everything. Just read! I don't care if you don't like reading, if you're going to write, read.

Do you have any other suggestions? Where do you find safe inspiration? Tell me about it!

Thank you for writing this. Your thoughts are so relevant! It's something I often ask, especially after reading what other Christians read (or write, for that matter). Strange perhaps for today, I don't use the internet at all for inspiration. But you'll be amazed by what you find if you pay careful attention to everyday life!

Absolutely, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Personally I love looking to Pinterest and music for inspiration, but you definitely do have to be careful of what you're feeding on if you go those routes haha. Yes, the everyday has a lot to offer if we'll use our imagination!

Greetings From The Planet Writing Daisies!

I am a Christian Teen writer who enjoys reading, art, bad puns, and music--especially Ukulele!

I started writing when I was nine years old. I told stories to my siblings daily, so it only made sense to take the next step up, and I love it! I hope you enjoy some of the things I've decided to share from my own experiences!

Jesus loves you <3
